What It Is: The first spy photos of the much anticipated Cadillac ATS coupe. Based on the well-received Cadillac ATS sedan, the ATS coupe will pick up the two-door slack for the brand as the current CTS coupe winds down over the next model year or so. This news is not entirely tear-worthy: The third-generation CTS was good, but the new ATS may be even better to drive, and the ATS coupe will inherit its chassis DNA from the sedan.
Why It Matters: The ATS coupe allows Cadillac to adopt a divide-and-conquer strategy. The ATS coupe will be vying for the same customers as the BMW 4-series coupe, Mercedes-Benz C-class coupe, and the Audi A5 coupe. Cadillac says 70 percent of ATS buyers are migrating from other luxury brands, and the two-door option gives Caddy another opportunity to bring prospective customers into the fold.
Platform: The coupe will arrive riding on the same rear- and all-wheel-drive Alpha chassis that underpins the ATS sedan. Originally, GM was said to be considering a convertible variant for the ATS lineup, however, the most recent rumblings have the droptop on the back burner or cancelled altogether.
Powertrain: Don’t expect any radical changes in the powertrain department, with the coupe raiding the ATS sedan’s full powertrain portfolio, which includes a 2.5-liter naturally aspirated four-cylinder, a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder, and a 3.6-liter V-6. There is a chance Cadillac may figure the 2.5-liter four is too pedestrian for use in the coupe, however sources tell us the V-series ATS sedan and coupe are still on track, and we expect to see a high-output version of the recently announced 3.6-liter twin-turbo V-6 to power those models.
Competition: Audi A5 Coupe, BMW 4-series coupe, Mercedes Benz C-class coupe.
