CARS NEW

Acura has unveiled a new concept for a compact crossover at the Shanghai motor show today. The Acura Concept SUV-X is touted as a "global vehicle", although this is the first time a new Acura concept design has been given its world premiere outside of North America.

The latest Acura design shows many bold styling features. An extremely narrow glasshouse and exaggerated wheelarches give the concept a muscular stance that's accentuated by large alloy wheels. Bold strikes in the bodywork and a sloping roofline add to the visual drama.

Acura hasn't revealed any specific technical details, but says the Concept SUV-X combines "the environmental performance of a small vehicle and excellent utility of a SUV".

The concept will inform a production model that will go on sale in China within three years. Honda Motor Company president Takanobu Ito said: "We are planning to produce the mass-production model of the Acura Concept SUV-X locally in China, with the hope that our Chinese customers will more closely feel the values offered from Acura."

The Honda-owned brand also showed off the latest iteration of the NSX Concept, as well as a Chinese version of the RLX. The luxury saloon, which is powered by a newly developed 3.5-litre V6 engine, will go on sale in China in June 2013.
