Rolls-Royce’s Starlight headliner, which places small fiber-optic lights in the roof upholstery to simulate a starlit sky, is available on the new Wraith coupe, but the company is planning something with a view of something even better than a simulated night sky. Rolls CEO Torsten Muller-Otvos told Auto Express that the new coupe’s design “certainly” lends itself to a convertible version, and thinks that will be the next variant.
This puts to rest some rumors that have suggested a Rolls-Royce SUV was in the pipeline. Unlike Bentley with its opulent EXP 9F concept, Otvos says the company has no plans to produce an SUV. The next vehicle to have the Flying Lady propped atop its hood will be a drophead Wraith, but producing a convertible version will take some time — don’t expect to see a drop-top Wraith in the next few years. Even though the Wraith was just introduced in Geneva, high demand for the rakish fastback coupe may soon lead to an increase in production at the Goodwood factory from 3000 units a year to around 4700.
Compared to the Ghost, the Wraith has a 7.2-inch shorter wheelbase, 0.9-inch wider rear track, and increased power. Though the Wraith houses the familiar 6.6-liter twin-turbo V-12 under the hood, it’s been modified to produce 624 hp and 590 lb-ft of torque, while the eight-speed ZF automatic transmission remains. Otvos also mentioned the possibility of replacing the aging Phantom with a possible plug-in hybrid version, which will hopefully work out better than the electric 102EX.
