The Volvo S60 is due for a refresh and we have our first sneak peek at the revised four-door thanks to spy photographers who caught the svelte Swede playing in the snow. Wearing camouflage only on its face, the prototype may preview changes coming to the 2014 Volvo S60.
Although we won’t be seeing the V40 on our shores, don’t be surprised to see some of its design cues trickle onto to the revised S60. A refreshed S60 could have touched-up headlights and may move the independently housed LED accent lights from between the headlights and the front grille to the edges of a restyled lower front fascia. At least on the S60 we spied, nothing appears to change around back or inside: the same clunky infotainment system sits atop the floating center stack.
A completely new S60 will likely come after the new XC90, which will be the first in the Volvo lineup to adopt a new Scalable Platform Architecture when it debuts sometime in 2014 for the 2015 model year. The new architecture will underpin the majority of the brand’s future models and shave off 200 to 330 pounds from current models by taking full advantage of aluminum use in the front structure, doors, chassis, and powertrain. The SPA will exclusively use four-cylinder power, and before long Volvo will add a plug-in hybrid for the U.S. market.
In a recent eight-car compact luxury sports sedan comparison, a Volvo S60 placed second, and we recently added an S60 T5 to our long-term fleet.
