This is the Volkswagen Passat Performance Concept, being showcased by Volkswagen today at the Detroit motor show.

Based on the US market Passat, it is designed to “explore the sporty side” of the four door saloon - according to Volkswagen. The Performance Concept is fitted with the 247bhp 1.8-litre turbocharged four cylinder engine already available in the European model.

Lowered sports suspension and revised electro-mechanical power steering are the limit of the performance enhancements.

The Performance Concept is visually differentiated from the production Passat by unique 19-inch alloy wheels, bi-xenon headlights and LED taillights, and carbon-effect wing mirror housings.

Inside the dashboard is swathed in carbon-effect material and the seats are upholstered in two-tone leather. Black headlining gives a cosseting feel and completes the makeover.

The Passat Performance Concept is being shown in conjunction with the launch of the R-Line trim level in the United States. It will first be offered on the Tiguan and Toureg off-roaders and will include sporty styling queues as well as gloss black and brushed metal interior trim finishes.
