This is the first picture of Vauxhall's new Astra-based convertible, officially released by Vauxhall just a day after we spotted a prototype out testing in Germany.
As you can see, the new drop-top is a genuine four-seater that will effectively replace the old Astra TwinTop sitting at the top of the new Astra range. The big difference here though is that a fabric roof will replace the current folding hard top set-up, saving weight and improving the car's dynamics and efficiency.
The model was only recently green lit for production by Vauxhall CEO Nick Reilly, but as this picture proves, the company has been working hard behind closed doors for many months.
As you can see, it features many cues from the Astra GTC, with similar tailights, while that plastic covering hides bold slashes in the bodywork. The firm's 'eagle-eye' headlights with optional LEDs appear at the front.
Expected to be a sporty model, it'll use some of the chassis mods from the Astra GTC too, with a ride height around 15mm lower than the five-door Astra’s with wider tracks and a slightly longer wheelbase. Engines will be carried over from the Astra line-up with turbocharged petrols and diesels.
Talking to Auto Express at the Geneva Motor Show, Nick Reilly referred to the new drop-top: “A number of models were put on hold as a result of the recession – the Astra GTC three-door coupé was delayed, for instance. But we will build a new convertible that will provide a ‘halo’ effect for the range.”
He continued: “It is two years away from launch, and will be a separate model. It will share some Astra components, but it will not be called Astra – in fact, we may use a name from our past. It will sit above the GTC.” Asked about the name, Reilly said: “Calibra
is possible, as well as Manta." For more details click here.
